How to Get to 1,500 Flight Hours

Fifteen hundred - it’s the magic number for commercial pilots. Since 2013, pilots have been looking for ways to hit the 1,500-flight-hour mark to begin flying for an airline. That’s when a federal law increased the minimum number of hours to possess an Airline Transport Pilot certificate from 250 to 1,500. Pilots can reach that milestone in many ways.

Piedmont is proud to sponsor the NGPA:

St. Louis Park, MN, January 29, 2020 – The National Gay Pilots Association (NGPA) is pleased to recognize the increased level of support from Piedmont Airlines. Piedmont Airlines joined NGPA’s Diamond Elite sponsorship level on January 1, 2020. Piedmont Airlines joins three other Diamond Elite supporters of NGPA’s mission.

“Piedmont’s priority has always been safety, and that goes beyond the safety of our aircraft and passengers. “We believe our team members must feel safe enough to express who they are and what they believe in,” said Piedmont’s Director of Recruitment Tyler Tenbrink. Piedmont is proud to sponsor an organization that recognizes strength in the foundation of diversity and the value of including all voices.”

Career Path to the Majors

Like many industries, the 2008 recession hit the airlines especially hard. The economic uncertainty derailed the careers of many pilots. Fortunately for the industry and the hard-working people who love to fly, many changes have taken place over the last decade.

There’s no better time for pilots to resume their careers at the airlines. The landscape in 2020 is completely different from what pilots might have seen at the height of the Great Recession.

Piedmont Airlines, a wholly owned subsidiary of American Airlines Group Inc., has partnered with the Latino Pilots Association to focus on raising awareness of pilot career opportunities in the Hispanic aviation community.

“The Latino Pilots Association is thrilled to have Piedmont as its first, regional airline sponsor,” said Jerry Dooyes, President, Latino Pilots Association.  “Piedmont has recognized the hard work put in by our member volunteers over the past five years and given tremendous credence to our cause. Thanks to Piedmont’s leadership and their commitment to our mission, we will be able to scale our efforts in key regions all around the country. On behalf of our Board, our leadership and member volunteers, we offer Piedmont our utmost gratitude and thanks.”

Pilots: 5 reasons you may want to change airlines

Fact: if you were hired by Piedmont in 2014, you would be flying for American Airlines today.

“Flow” to American Airlines was a revolutionary concept in 2014. Now, five years later, the direct path to American Airlines is paying off for thousands of pilots.  Is it time for your course correction? Here are some clues:

You’re looking for status.

Some regional pilots will always be regional pilots – but not at Piedmont. On your first day of training, you’ll receive an American Airlines ID number.  You’ll travel as an American Airlines employee, use an American Airlines email address and receive American Airlines profit sharing.

On an icy winter afternoon in Rhode Island in 1982, Lyle Hogg, currently the president/CEO of Piedmont Airlines — one of American Airlines wholly-owned regional carriers — helped land Pilgrim Airlines Flight 458 as the cockpit became engulfed in fire. Despite the flames melting their headsets and burning their uniforms, then First Officer Hogg and Captain Thomas Prinster managed to navigate down from 4,000 feet and landed successfully on a frozen reservoir, saving the lives of nine passengers onboard.

For his heroic efforts, Captain Hogg will be recognized by the Rhode Island Aviation Hall of Fame, along with six other honorees, at a ceremony this Saturday, Nov. 23.

Piedmont launches new, flexible pilot cadet program

Includes $25,500 and American Airlines flight benefits

Career Path to the Majors

For most pilots coming out of flight school, the road to 1500 hours – the amount of flying a pilot must log to be hired by a commercial airline -  is long and expensive. Getting paid as a flight instructor or sky diving pilot can help, but the reality for most is renting a plane on weekends, plunking down money for time and fuel, flying a few hours and repeating the following weekend.

To help alleviate the burden, Piedmont Airlines is offering a new, flexible cadet program and incentives of $25,500 for pilots who need to build hours. Unlike traditional cadet programs, Piedmont’s flexible program doesn’t tie pilots to a particular school, occupation or time frame.
