Flying in formation: A father-daughter legacy at Piedmont

For First Officer Michael Gross and his daughter Lillian Gross, aviation isn’t just a career. It’s a shared legacy that connects generations, values, and purpose. For Father’s Day, we’re highlighting a story of legacy, learning, and love for aviation.

Michael, a First Officer based in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (MDT), and a board member of Piedmont’s Veterans & Military Employee Resource Group, began his aviation journey through Army service, where helicopters and military aircraft were a constant part of family life. “Lillian grew up surrounded by Army Aviation,” he shared. “Helicopters were a common sight and sound in our lives.”

Now a Travel Intern at Piedmont, Lillian remembers those early exposures vividly. “Aviation has always been a part of my life due to my dad’s military career. Being able to work at the same company as an adult is a cool experience I’m lucky to have.”

Although their roles differ, with Michael in the flight deck and Lillian supporting operations from the corporate side, their passion for aviation unites them. “I’m proud of all my children’s work ethic,” said Michael. “And I’m definitely learning more about American Airlines travel now that we have a subject matter expert in the house.”

Lillian adds, “Most new employees wouldn’t know how to navigate non-revenue travel, but thanks to my dad, I was already familiar with the process before I even started.”

Piedmont has become more than just a workplace for the Gross family. It is a place of opportunity, growth, and the potential to build a lasting career. Michael’s son, also named Michael, is currently working toward his Airframe and Powerplant certification with support from Piedmont’s Tuition Payment Program. He hopes to join the company as an Aviation Maintenance Technician in 2025.

“Piedmont offers stability and opportunity,” Michael said. “Even though the aviation industry can be impacted by global events, it is an industry that continues to grow. It’s a great place to start or advance a career.”

Lillian agrees. “With my dad flying, my brother preparing for maintenance, and me in an internship, our family is exploring aviation from multiple angles. It’s a fascinating and meaningful industry to be a part of.”

Happy Father’s Day to all the incredible dads, and to every aviation family helping inspire the next generation of flyers, fixers, and future leaders.
