More than compliance: building a culture of safety through presence

At Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), where hundreds of Piedmont Airlines team members keep flights moving safely and on time, Markeese Jones is a familiar and unmistakable presence.

You might hear him before you see him; a friendly wave, a quick smile, and a genuine greeting are paired with a reminder of the day’s safety and compliance focus.

Known by many as THE Philadelphia Ground Safety Manager, Markeese’s impact reaches far beyond the PHL operation. He was recently recognized as one of Piedmont Airlines’ President’s Award recipients for his leadership and commitment to Piedmont Ground Safety.

The President’s Award is Piedmont’s most prestigious award, celebrating team members who set the gold standard when it comes to embodying the company’s core values of caring, compliance, communication and community. A recognition that hit home

For those familiar with his presence and leadership, the recognition comes as no surprise. But, when Markeese first learned he received the award, the moment caught him off guard. Just days earlier, he had been wondering how anyone could earn a distinction like that. Being nominated, and ultimately selected, was both humbling and deeply meaningful.

Leading through presence

PHL is home to more than 600 Piedmont team members and staying connected to that many people takes effort. For Markeese, it is essential. He makes a point to learn names, engage across departments, and ensure every team member feels seen, whether they work on the ramp, at the gate, in training, in the baggage service office, as ground security coordinators, or in maintenance.

His focus is not limited to correcting non-compliance. It also includes recognizing strong performance and recognizing team members for doing things the right way.

His commitment is reflected in the numbers: last year, Markeese logged nearly three times as many safety conversations as his peers. His approachability has helped foster trust and open dialogue, especially among new team members who are still learning the operation.

For Markeese, showing up consistently sends a clear message: safety is about partnership, not punishment.

A different perspective on Safety

Before joining Piedmont, Markeese worked in law enforcement, an experience that shaped his approach to safety leadership. He understands how fear and hesitation can surface when something goes wrong, and he knows how to ask the right questions. His focus is always on understanding what happened and how to prevent it moving forward rather than placing blame. He often refers to this process as “deep diving,” a practice he believes strengthens trust and accountability across the team.

Building a career, the Piedmont way

Although his title carries a bit of personality, Markeese’s reputation was built from the ground up. He began his career as a ramp agent and worked his way into safety leadership through consistency, accountability, and genuine care for both the operation and the people who keep it running. Stepping into the Ground Safety Manager role in Philadelphia marked a significant milestone in his career and reinforced his desire to be an asset not just to one station, but to the entire company.

Impact beyond PHL

Markeese is keenly aware that his actions help set the tone and the standard, not only locally but across the system. He approaches his work with discipline and intention, understanding that consistency in one place influences expectations everywhere.

When asked to support Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) during a vacancy, he welcomed the opportunity. Spending time in another station reinforced an important lesson: while locations and teams may differ, many of the challenges are the same. Alignment, he believes, comes down to addressing the small things early and applying standards consistently to prevent larger issues down the road.

His impact extends beyond the operation, too. As a member of the Pride Employee Resource Group, Markeese also values inclusion as a foundational part of station culture. Philadelphia’s diversity, he believes, is a strength. Creating an inclusive environment sets the expectation that everyone is welcome, respected, and united by pride in the work they do.

Ask what fuels his energy, and the answer is simple: he genuinely loves what he does. In just over three years with Piedmont, including his time on the ramp, Markeese has made a meaningful impact. Stepping into a role where he can contribute both in-station and out-of-station is what he is most proud of.

His advice to future safety leaders is straightforward: stay focused. stay disciplined and never drift from the standard.

For Markeese, the impact is clear in the moments that matter most: when teams adjust their focus simply because he has arrived, it is not about authority. It is about trust in the standard and confidence in his commitment to doing things the right way.

And if you hear someone cheerfully announcing, “it’s Compliance Day,” there is a good chance Markeese is nearby. He begins each day with a sincere good morning to everyone he passes, setting the tone through presence and consistency.
